AIM: This study sought to assess how the flipped classroom model of instruction affected self-directed learning readiness and learning outcomes among Nigerian nursing students enrolled in a research method class. BACKGROUND: Although the effectiveness of the flipped classroom model of instruction has been thoroughly and scientifically investigated in several fields, its potential to promote self-directed learning readiness and learning outcomes in a research method class has not yet been investigated. DESIGN: A quasi-experimental design was employed. To achieve the study's objectives, two experiments were conducted: a pre-test and a post-test. METHODS: Participants were 64 400-level nursing undergraduates purposively recruited from two government-owned universities in Southeast Nigeria. The experimental group received a flipped classroom model of teaching methods, while the control group received traditional teaching methods (TTM) from April - July 2021. A validated self-directed learning readiness scale and multiple-choice questions derived from a research method course were used to gather data. A structured questionnaire was used to collect demographic data. Descriptive statistics of frequencies, percentages, means and standard deviations were applied to the collected data. A one-factor independent measure analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) and an independent sample t-test was employed to compare the pre-and post-test results of FCM and TTM students. RESULTS: Pre-test results from self-directed learning readiness showed overall scores of 3.99 ± 0.39 and 3.95 ± 0.35 for the traditional teaching method and flipped classroom model, respectively, while post-test results showed overall scores of 3.84 ± 077 for the traditional teaching method and 4.01 ± 0.81 for flipped classroom model. The difference in mean scores between the pre-and post-tests was statistically significant (p=0.030). Pre- (p=.001) and post- (p =.025) learning outcomes for the flipped classroom model were significantly higher than those for the traditional teaching method. CONCLUSION: The flipped classroom model of instruction had a positive impact on nursing students' readiness for self-directed learning and learning outcomes in the research course. Since the method demonstrated statistically significant benefits in both the development of self-learning abilities and learning achievements, the need to improve learning experiences through the flipped learning method should be promoted.

INTRODUCTION: Secondary data analysis is a cost-effective, accessible, and efficient means of utilizing existing data to answer new research questions. METHOD: The manuscript provides an overview of the secondary data analysis process, as well as benefits and limitations inherent in the research method. RESULTS: An exemplar of pediatric focused research using a publicly available dataset is presented to facilitate understanding of the process. DISCUSSION: Novice and experienced researchers benefit from exploring the quantitative and qualitative secondary data analysis options available.

Group level assessment (GLA) is a qualitative and participatory research-to-action methodology designed to engage a large group of relevant participants throughout the research process. As originally conceived, a single GLA session is led by a trained facilitator who guides the participants through seven structured steps: climate setting, generating, appreciating, reflecting, understanding, selecting, and action. The purpose of this manuscript is to describe the 25-year trajectory and uses, contributions as a liberating structure, and adaptations of GLA.

This study explores the factors influencing athletes' compensation satisfaction and their configuration effects. A mixed research approach that combines regression analysis and fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis (fsQCA) was applied to process the survey data of 352 athletes from six provinces. The regression analysis results demonstrate that economic compensation, the compensation system, the external environment, and compensation fairness all have a significant positive effect on athletes' compensation satisfaction. Accordingly, the fsQCA approach was applied to explore the combined effects of the factors influencing athletes' compensation satisfaction, which verifies the conclusions drawn from regression analysis and provides improvement paths for increasing athletes' compensation satisfaction.

RESUMO

Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) have traditionally been considered the gold standard for medical evidence. However, in light of emerging methodologies in data science, many experts question the role of RCTs. Within this context, experts in the USA and Canada came together to debate whether the primacy of RCTs as the gold standard for medical evidence, still holds in light of recent methodological advances in data science and in the era of big data. The purpose of this manuscript, aims to raise awareness of the pros and cons of RCTs and observational studies in order to help guide clinicians, researchers, students, and decision-makers in making informed decisions on the quality of medical evidence to support their work. In particular, new and underappreciated advantages and disadvantages of both designs are contrasted. Innovations taking place in both of these research methodologies, which can blur the lines between the two, are also discussed. Finally, practical guidance for clinicians and future directions in assessing the quality of evidence is offered.

The present tutorial provides a technical overview of how to create web applications for online psychological experiments from scratch via the HTML/CSS/JavaScript framework. This approach allows virtually unlimited flexibility in accomplishing anything in an online experiment that a regular computer (or smartphone, etc.) is capable of. Apart from offering a fast introduction for complete beginners, this tutorial may also serve as a helpful guideline for more experienced programmers and researchers. Connected to the tutorial, a specific implementation is also given via the free and open-source template project at https://github.com/gasparl/expapp , intended to be improved by the community to always follow the latest technological advancements and general good practices.

BACKGROUND: The issues of replication and scientific transparency have been raised in exercise and sports science research. A potential means to address the replication crisis and enhance research reliability is to improve reporting quality and transparency. This study aims to formulate a reporting checklist as a supplement to the existing reporting guidelines, specifically for resistance exercise studies. METHODS: PubMed (which covers Medline) and Scopus (which covers Medline, EMBASE, Ei Compendex, World Textile Index, Fluidex, Geobase, Biobase, and most journals in Web of Science) were searched for systematic reviews that comprised the primary studies directly comparing different resistance training methods. Basic data on the selected reviews, including on authors, publication years, and objectives, were summarized. The reporting items for the checklist were identified based on the objective of the reviews. Additional items from an existing checklist, namely the Consensus on Exercise Reporting Template, a National Strength and Conditioning Association handbook, and an article from the EQUATOR library were incorporated into the final reporting checklist. RESULTS: Our database search retrieved 3595 relevant records. After automatic duplicate removal, the titles and abstracts of the remaining 2254 records were screened. The full texts of 137 records were then reviewed, and 88 systematic reviews that met the criteria were included in the umbrella review. CONCLUSION: Developed primarily by an umbrella review method, this checklist covers the research questions which have been systematically studied and is expected to improve the reporting completeness of future resistance exercise studies. The PRIRES checklist comprises 26 reporting items (39 subitems) that cover four major topics in resistance exercise intervention: 1) exercise selection, performance, and training parameters, 2) training program and progression, 3) exercise setting, and 4) planned vs actual training. The PRIRES checklist was designed specifically for reporting resistance exercise intervention. It is expected to be used with other reporting guidelines such as Consolidated Standards of Reporting Trials and Standard Protocol Items: Recommendations for Interventional Trials. This article presents only the development process and resulting items of the checklist. An accompanying article detailing the rationale for, the importance of, and examples of each item is being prepared. REGISTRATION: This study is registered with the EQUATOR Network under the title "Preferred Reporting Items for Resistance Exercise Studies (PRIRES)." PROSPERO registration number: CRD42021235259.

AIM: To describe the application of selected creative and participatory research methods in nursing science. DESIGN: Research methodology paper. METHODS: Researcher-initiated role play, stimulated recall interviews, the Storycrafting method, painting and drawing. Altogether, 11 children (5-7 years old) and 12 parents participated in the research. RESULTS: Each small group (n = 3) acted differently during the data collection. Not every child wanted to play, draw or tell stories, but they all expressed their views through some method. Although the same themes emerged from children's narratives, they could not have been verified by just one method. CONCLUSIONS: Using creative and participatory methods and the principles of studies of child perspectives are applicable ways of conducting research in nursing science. Children must be treated as individuals during the research process, and they must have opportunities to use several communication methods to express their views. IMPLICATIONS FOR THE PROFESSION AND PATIENT CARE: Understanding different ways to interact with children and hear children's views will help nurses to encounter children. IMPACT: In this article, we present a valid way of conducting research with children. By following our protocol, nursing research from a child perspective can be implemented. REPORTING METHOD: Consolidated criteria for reporting qualitative research (COREQ). PATIENT CONTRIBUTION: The child participants were involved in choosing physical places for data collection and the usage and order of the selected methods. Both the children and the adult participants took part in interpreting the research data.

This study assessed perception and experience of trained primary health care workers in using a mobile app-based version of the WHO mental health gap action programme (mhGAP) Intervention Guide in the assessment and management of people with mental health conditions in primary care in Nepal. A qualitative study was conducted with primary healthcare workers who were trained in using the WHO mhGAP mobile application in Jhapa, a district in eastern Nepal. Semi-structured interviews were carried out with 15 healthcare workers (3 females and 12 males) nine months after the training. Interviews were audio recorded, transcribed and translated into English for the thematic qualitative data analysis. Health care workers (HCWs) found the mobile app helpful to verify and confirm their assessment and diagnosis. The other benefits reported by the participants were: bringing uniformity in diagnosis and management of mental health conditions across primary healthcare facilities; reminding the HCWs specific assessment questions; creating awareness on the importance of psychosocial intervention; improving the interaction between patients and service providers; and the importance of follow-up care. Despite these advantages, lack of clarity about report submission modality; lack of electricity or internet connectivity; and low technology literacy among older HCWs were some of the barriers in using the app. The major recommendation made by the HCWs for the guide included revision of the assessment process and system; inclusion of a chat function with supervisors; minimizing the amount of patients' data to be collected in the app; and addition of conversion and anxiety disorders to the app. This study concludes that the mobile decision support application could be acceptable and feasible in primary care settings if the suggested modifications are incorporated, in addition to addressing other systemic issues facing the primary care-based delivery of mental health services.

OBJECTIVES: A National Recruitment Scheme (NRS) for Pharmacy trainees was introduced in England and Wales in 2017, standardising recruitment processes on behalf of employers and with the aim of reducing bias for candidates applying to training posts within the National Health Service (NHS). This research attempted to identify whether the introduction of the NRS had an impact on the recruitment of Black, Asian, or other Minority Ethnic applicants into the most sought-after posts within the Scheme (hospital posts). METHODS: An observational study was undertaken. Anonymised pharmacist trainee recruitment data between the cohort intakes of 2015-16 and 2020-21 was obtained from the pharmacy regulator the General Pharmaceutical Council and a comparison of proportional representations of ethnicities was undertaken, to ascertain whether a greater proportion of applicants from minority backgrounds attained the most sought-after posts in the NHS after the NRS was introduced. A robust generalised linear model was then used to analyse the data using binomial as the variance function and logit as a link function, where the proportion of hospital recruitment was an outcome with a two-way interaction between intervention and ethnicity after adjusting for overall proportion. KEY FINDINGS: The statistical analysis of 18 283 pharmacy trainees in total, of whom 4446 were in hospital, shows a significant overall impact of intervention, with a significant positive change in the proportions of Asian-Pakistani applicants (P-value < 0.001) and Black-African applicants (P-value < 0.001) recruited to hospital posts. CONCLUSIONS: Since the introduction of the NRS there has been a statistically significant impact on the correlation between the overall number of Black, Asian or other Minority Ethnic applicants and their proportion in hospital. That is, not only is the makeup of the hospital cohort increasingly reflecting the diversity of the overall cohort, but also a larger percentage of each ethnic cohort is attaining hospital training places.

Major advances in mastering metabolism of single carbon (C1) gaseous feedstocks in acetogenic microorganisms are primed to fuel the transition toward environmentally sustainable and cost-efficient production schemes of biofuels and value-added biochemicals. Since acetogens grow under autotrophic energy-limited conditions, protein synthesis is expected to be controlled. This survey integrated publicly available RNA sequencing and ribosome profiling studies of several acetogens, providing data on genome-scale transcriptional and translational responses of A. woodii, E. limosum, C. drakei, and C. ljungdahlii to autotrophic and heterotrophic growth conditions. The extent of translational efficiency turned out to vary across key functional modules in acetogens' metabolism. Translational control was confirmed to support stoichiometric protein production in multimeric complexes. Comparing the autotrophic to the heterotrophic growth condition revealed growth-dependent regulation of translational efficiency, pointing at translational buffering as a widespread phenomenon shared by acetogens.

OBJECTIVES: Since 2013 community pharmacies in Wales have been commissioned to provide a common ailments service (CAS), providing pharmacy medicine without charge to patients. In the first review of national pharmacy data, this study aimed to describe the relationship between provision of CAS and deprivation. METHODS: A retrospective observational study, using CAS claims data from April 2022 to March 2023 collected as part of routine service delivery. Consultation data were matched to the index of multiple deprivation (IMD) decile of the providing pharmacy. Linear regression was used to describe the correlation between CAS claims data and IMD deciles of the pharmacy postcode. KEY FINDINGS: In the study period, 239 028 consultations were recorded. More than twice as many consultations were carried out in pharmacies located in the most deprived decile (33 950) than in pharmacies in the least deprived decile (14 465). Linear regression demonstrated a significant correlation r(10) = -0.927, P < 0.001. There was a strong relationship between greater numbers of consultations and greater deprivation of the pharmacy postcode (R2 = 0.887). This significant correlation with deprivation was also found in the majority of individual conditions. There was no significant correlation between deprivation decile and the number of consultations per patient. CONCLUSIONS: Community pharmacies offer a key resource for tackling health inequalities. Patients in those areas with the greatest need are those most likely to use the CAS in pharmacies and receive the care they need. Commissioning services like this naturally supports deprived communities, through a combination of patient behaviours, location, and accessibility.

This research aims to investigate the impact of human work interruptions on positive affective responses and their underlying mechanisms in the Chinese context. In the first stage, this study conducted face-to-face semi-structured interviews with 29 employees representing diverse industries. The grounded theory research method was used to extract the construct of human work interruption, identify its core attributes, and capture the naturally emerging storyline of "human work interruptions - coping potential - polychronicity - positive affective responses". In the second stage, a theoretical model was constructed and validated using 362 questionnaires. The results indicate that in the Chinese context: (1) human work interruptions can trigger positive affective responses; (2) coping potential mediates the relationship between human work interruptions and positive affective responses; (3) when individuals have a higher level of polychronicity, the impact of human work interruptions on positive affective responses via coping potential is enhanced. The findings of this study effectively address the hypothesis of the "positive aspect" of work interruptions proposed by management scholars and contribute to the existing literature on work interruptions and positive affective responses. Moreover, this research provides practical and theoretical implications for managers and employees in managing and coping with human work interruptions.

BACKGROUND: The anatomy laboratory can provide the ideal setting for the preclinical phase of neurosurgical research. Our purpose is to comprehensively and critically review the preclinical anatomical quantification methods used in cranial neurosurgery. METHODS: A systematic review was conducted following the PRISMA guidelines. The PubMed, Ovid MEDLINE, and Ovid EMBASE databases were searched, yielding 1667 papers. A statistical analysis was performed using R. RESULTS: The included studies were published from 1996 to 2023. The risk of bias assessment indicated high-quality studies. Target exposure was the most studied feature (81.7%), mainly with area quantification (64.9%). The surgical corridor was quantified in 60.9% of studies, more commonly with the quantification of the angle of view (60%). Neuronavigation-based methods benefit from quantifying the surgical pyramid features that define a cranial neurosurgical approach and allowing post-dissection data analyses. Direct measurements might diminish the error that is inherent to navigation methods and are useful to collect a small amount of data. CONCLUSION: Quantifying neurosurgical approaches in the anatomy laboratory provides an objective assessment of the surgical corridor and target exposure. There is currently limited comparability among quantitative neurosurgical anatomy studies; sharing common research methods will provide comparable data that might also be investigated with artificial intelligence methods.

COVID-19 (coronavirus disease 2019) has become the deadliest virus to affect the international community in recent history, with more than 760 million people infected and more than 6.87 million deaths as of March 2023; therefore, based on Hofstede's national cultural theory, this study collected Hofstede's six national cultural dimensions on a global scale, namely, power distance (PDI), individualism/collectivism (IDV), masculinity/femininity (MAS), uncertainty avoidance (UAI), long-term/short-term orientation (LTO), and indulgence/restraint (IVR) scores, and COVID-19 data from the World Health Organization (WHO) from 22 February 2020 to 30 February 2021. Then, based on eight items of global COVID-19 data, this study analyzed the correlation between Hofstede's six dimensions and the COVID-19 data from six regions (Africa (AFRO), Europe (EURO), the Americas (AMRO), the Western Pacific (WPRO), South East Asia (SEARO), and the Eastern Mediterranean (EMRO)) divided by the WHO. This study found the following: (1) Hofstede's six cultural dimensions indeed have a significant correlation with the COVID-19 data of different WHO regions in different ways. (2) Except for IDV and UAI, PDI is a highly critical factor and has a significant correlation with the COVID-19 data from AFRO and EMRO. MAS also is an important factor and has a significant correlation with COVID-19 data from WPRO and SEARO. Meanwhile, LTO has a significant correlation with some COVID-19 data from the AMRO region, and IVR has a significant correlation with some COVID-19 data from the EURO region. Finally, the new insights from this study are worthy of further study by scholars, and they will be of great help to global governments and medical institutions in formulating policies to suppress infectious diseases in the future.

OBJECTIVES: To examine the lived experience of adolescent athletes reporting an episode of sport-related low back pain (LBP), including effects on daily life, relationships with parent/guardians, teammates, and coaches with relation to LBP, experiences of management/treatment, and understanding of LBP. DESIGN: Qualitative interviewing using online video conferencing platforms. PARTICIPANTS: Athletes aged 10-19 years old who experienced low back pain within the year prior to interviewing. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Interview transcripts, Modified Oswestry Disability Index, and International Physical Activity Questionnaire. RESULTS: Three main themes were developed 1) The culture of normalising LBP in sport negates safeguarding efforts aimed at protecting adolescent athletes against injury and pain 2) LBP changes how athletes are perceived and perceive themselves 3) LBP has broad effects on the well-being of adolescent athletes. CONCLUSIONS: The lived experience of LBP for adolescent athletes is impacted by the culture of tolerance of pain and injury in sport. Further steps should be taken to implement safeguarding measures in a way that adequately protects adolescent athletes who experience pain.

Systematic reviews provide important empirical evidence for healthcare providers to make the best clinical decisions. While qualitative research provides subjective information on the human experience, quantitative research may be used to provide quantified evaluations of interventions. To overcome the lack of objectivity in qualitative research and of context considerations in quantitative research, recent efforts have focused on developing mixed-method approaches that combine meta-analysis (quantitative systematic reviews) and meta-synthesis (qualitative systematic reviews). This new idea may help conceptualize studied phenomena more thoroughly. However, the typology remains inconsistent and the currently proposed approaches lack unified guidance and principles. In this paper, "mixed methods systematic review", a term promoted by the Joanna Briggs Institute, is used to indicate the newly developed systematic review. The use of systematic review in quantitative research and in qualitative research and the use of mixed methods systematic review are introduced chronologically, with an emphasis on procedures, examples, and quality appraisal tools. The concepts and concrete procedures for integrating results from different research method are presented for researchers and healthcare providers to allow them to better understand this approach and explore related phenomena more thoroughly.

BACKGROUND: The GRADE (Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation) approach is a system for transparent evaluation of the certainty of evidence used in clinical practice guidelines and systematic reviews. GRADE is a key part of evidence-based medicine (EBM) training of health care professionals. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to compare web-based and face-to-face methods of teaching the GRADE approach for evidence assessment. METHODS: A randomized controlled trial was conducted on 2 delivery modes of GRADE education integrated into a course on research methodology and EBM with third-year medical students. Education was based on the Cochrane Interactive Learning "Interpreting the findings" module, which had a duration of 90 minutes. The web-based group received the web-based asynchronous training, whereas the face-to-face group had an in-person seminar with a lecturer. The main outcome measure was the score on a 5-question test that assessed confidence interval interpretation and overall certainty of evidence, among others. Secondary outcomes included writing a recommendation for practice and course satisfaction. RESULTS: In all, 50 participants received the web-based intervention, and 47 participants received the face-to-face intervention. The groups did not differ in the overall scores for the Cochrane Interactive Learning test, with a median of 2 (95% CI 1.0-2.0) correct answers for the web-based group and 2 (95% CI 1.3-3.0) correct answers for the face-to-face group. Both groups gave the most correct answers to the question about rating a body of evidence (35/50, 70% and 24/47, 51% for the web-based and face-to-face group, respectively). The face-to-face group better answered the question about the overall certainty of evidence question. The understanding of the Summary of Findings table did not differ significantly between the groups, with a median of 3 correct answers to 4 questions for both groups (P=.352). The writing style for the recommendations for practice also did not differ between the 2 groups. Students' recommendations mostly reflected the strengths of the recommendations and focused on the target population, but they used passive words and rarely mentioned the setting for the recommendation. The language of the recommendations was mostly patient centered. Course satisfaction was high in both groups. CONCLUSIONS: Training in the GRADE approach could be equally effective when delivered asynchronously on the web or face-to-face.
